Florida FAQ

In Florida what is the minimum about of insurance I must have?

We have to answer this question with another question? Before or after the accident? In Florida all you need to register your car is proof of PIP coverage and PD Property Damage, but here is the problem. Once you are in an accident where there is BI – Bodily Injury or where an auto must be towed away then you must prove that you have liability coverage in the limits of at least 10/20/10 or CSL Combined Single Limits of $30,000

Ok, I am confused why should I have "Uninsured Motorist" coverage if every one in Florida is suppose to have insurance.

Uninsured motorist and underinsured motorist “ Pays an insured and passengers in their car for BODILY INJURY losses sustain caused by an operator of an uninsured (or underinsured) auto. Let us explain further :

OK – First the only requirement if folks registering a vehicle in the state of Florida is PIP and PD liability, That is $10,000 for injuries to themselves, hence “No-Fault” pays no matter who is at fault and another $10,000 for Property Damage done to YOUR property if they are at fault. The law does not mandate any Bodily injury coverage at all. With that being said, if the other person is at fault and does bodily injury to you and has no insurance or low limits you will have money to pay for the injuries they caused.

Uninsured motorist would pay for not only medical expenses but pain and suffering, embarrassment , grief and other non economic losses. Since this is a claim against your insurance for the wrong doing of others claims are settled under this coverage by agreement, arbitration and rarely by Court action.

Will my Homeowners Policy cover my damage to my car if it is in storage in the garage and I have no coverage on it?

NO! Under the standard Homeowners policy generally, the only coverage you have for any motor vehicle in dead storage is liability. That is if someone would get hurt if it were to fall on them. Remember we said dead storage – no battery attached and no way for someone to start it.

I modified my car’s Stereo system and put about $2,500 in upgrades is this covered?

Generally NO! First you must have Comprehensive or Other than Collision coverage. But, many questions must be answered here and you must read the policy, but most policies state the device must be factory installed or where the factory would have placed the device. Most policies put a $1,000 limit on other equipment. However, an endorsement is available. If you are one of our insures please click to set up a video conference with your agent

In the State of Florida for personal auto “Primary owned Excess non-owned” applies to most auto insurance policies, that is YOUR insurance is primary in a vehicle owned and insured by you. Your insuace is excess (or second) in any non owned vehicle. Commercial auto policies DO NOT respond this way.

Is it smart to select a higher deductible on collision and comprehensive coverage?

This is actually a risk management question. The answer is indeed an individual one, how much risk can one tolerate. Here is an example; say we have an insured who is able to cover the down payment on a new auto or for that matter the entire cost of the car without any hardship. If this is the case the insured should look at self insuring the auto.

Now take the case of a struggling new family who would have to go into savings to cover the down payment, if the cost of acquiring a new auto would be a hardship we would recommend keeping physical damage coverage on the car.

How much liability coverage should a person carry?

Again this is a risk management question. How much assets do you have? Our agency philosophy is to “retain” as much property risk as you can tolerate and purchase as much liability insurance as you can afford. Every one should have a liability umbrella policy.
